Description

These kusudama are fairly close to some of the "spiky kusudama" in an older pic at [link] -- they're essentially modular cubes held together with unglued edge hinges.

This time, I'd been hoping to produce something that looked like a poinsettia for the #Origami-United holiday contest, which is why all of them are built around reddish-orange face modules with spiky "petals" at the corners. Looking at this pic, maybe I should've just used red paper for all of the pieces instead of different-colored edge hinges and face-insert decorations. A more elaborate icosahedral shape would have five "petals" in eacxh vertex group instead of just three, but my paper supply makes it awkward to modify a flat square face module into a three-sided pyramid, and anyway I don't think I can stand folding 20 more of these face modules :b

The largest (right, ~5" across) and smallest (center, ~2.5" across) kusudama use nearly identical patterns. Their edge hinge pattern is a slight elaboration of one from Lew Rozelle's Origami Ornaments. As for their inserts, the largest one just has plain orange quarter-squares; the smallest one has yellow paper blintzed to quarter-square size.

The medium-sized one (~3.5" across) has a more elaborate face module from Rozelle's book, with outward flaps that nearly hide the edge hinges. Each face was folded with a flat square insert inside, which is now mostly hidden by the starbird/birdstar ornaments I put over them.

The faces of the medium and largest kusudama were folded from 3.5" squares. The faces of the smallest kusudama were folded from the corresponding quarter-squares (1.75"). Edge hinges were folded from 2.5" or 1.25" squares.
